Who Will Survive? Season 1 Round 1 Final Results!
After reviewing each entry, the judges have made their conclusion-and it is icy! Below is the list of contestants and their survival ratings as derived from the popular vote, the judges comments, and final score. The contestants are in order by their final score.
Note: After finishing this review, we double checked the popular vote results at 11:00 pm. In the few hours on Sunday night from beginning our final review to the completion of this post, there were a large number of popular votes that changed many of the rankings, much to our dismay (because we had to re-do much of this page). However, it did not change the top contestant, or the bottom two.
Amy R. Popular Score: 4.0 Judges Score: 4.5 Survival Chance 85%
Though you were not the crowd favorite (you were tied for runner-up!), the judges were very impressed by your emergency preparedness perspective. It was logical and gave tons of great preparedness tips that could be applicable to any situation.
Ben R. Popular Score: 4.1 Judges Score: 4.0 Survival Chance 81%
Another great entry! In fact, this entry was our favorite in many ways. Also, it was the crowd favorite! Perhaps the best way is the way that it is written in more of a story mode. This makes the reading fun and educational at the same time. Unlike everyone on the list, we agreed that sheltering in your car was a great idea.
Frank P. Popular Score: 3.3 Judges Score: 4.0 Survival Chance 73%
You hit many solid points and we did not have many critiques. Our favorite like was in regards to knives, they are good “for just cutting things”. We decided to break the tie here by the popular vote. Being this high on the list this early gives little concern with either spot.
Austin R. Popular Score: 3.8 Judges Score: 3.5 Survival Chance 73%
This was a solid entry with many great points. Due to the popular vote, you are just shy of greatness. We see how you tried to include more than one item as well, but in a twist attempting to explain the perimeters of the scenario. We have expounded on that in Alex’s comments below. Generally, scenario’s are loose and we would just like to see what everyone’s thought process.
Michael R. Popular Score: 3.5 Judges Score: 3.5 Survival Chance 70%
Great entry, many great points: your gear is geared towards successful warmth and sheltering. The only wildcard that might put questions in the public’s mind would be the walking stick. Well, that may or may not come in handy in the next scenario we will have to see.
Alex B. Popular Score: 3.3 Judges Score: 3.0 Survival Chance 63%
At one point, you had the popular vote in the bag. That point where you fell was…oh yeah, at 11:00 pm Sunday night at the last-minute (literally). Overall, it was a top contender and your level of thought and detail was very good. The only reason why you were not a 4.0 or higher was that you have a sixth item. “This does not include a knife which I have on my person at all times.” Though this is a great thing to do personally, we could not count that as a free item, like we could with winter clothes such as a coat, which some contestants did expound on. That is perhaps an issue with the explanation of the rules or lack of details in the scenario. This may have thrown off others as well.
Vincent J. Popular Score: 3.0 Judges Score: 3.0 Survival Chance 60%
Vincent, you are our middle class entry. You made many great points, and was the only participant to include a firearm. We would love to see some more explanation about the use of your items, though. Not only will that impress us, and hopefully the public, but the ultimate goal is to get people to think and to learn something new. That is what we are looking for when we evaluate these entries- WE want to learn and to think about things that we had not before. As a side note, you were the only unchanged popular score after the Sunday night voting frenzy.
Joe R. Popular Score: 3.3 Judges Score 2.5 Survival Chance 58%
You played a good game, but you are in the bottom two. You made some good points in regards to the gear that you have, but did not seem to think outside the box. Also, you seemed certain that you did not need much. However, the situation is not a cakewalk and you should always come prepared. Perhaps we are being harsh, but the lack of preparedness mind does not bode well for a preparedness competition.
Olekisy P. Popular Score: 3.0 Judges Score: 2.5 Survival Chance 55%
Overall, you made some good points. You definitely had items that no one else had, so it was great for consideration. However, when compared with your situation, we are not sure how your items will help you in the long run- though we will see! We are not too sure, but were very entertained with, the “nugget” comment. We are also looking forward to how this plays out. We think that your entry has great potential, and the public seems to also want more from you.
Benjamin S. Popular Score: 2.9 Judges Score: 2.5 Survival Chance 54%
We are sorry, but it looks like the stressed out snowman had a meltdown! Ben, you had great gear and definitely know some basic things to keep yourself alive in an emergency. Ultimately, the lack of details brought about the lack of popularity, and that seemed to run you in. Thank you for playing in the first game of Who Will Survive!
