In regards to the growing conflict between Russia, Syria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the United States, a ceasefire agreement was reached between parties under the leadership of Russia and the U.S.A. Even Vladimir Putin seemed to be on board with the arranged two week ceasefire that was to start on 2/27/2016.
Despite this effort, it was no more than two days into the temporary truce that Russia has bombed six towns and villages in Syria. The Russian Military has not commented on these recent strikes, however they did reserve the right to target ISIS or Al-Qaeda affiliate targets. Despite this, in the past Russian strikes have targeted rebel locations that have been supported by the United States, under the guise of “ISIS or Al-Qaeda targets”.
Per USA Today, both sides of the Syrian conflict have accused the other of breaking this new agreement. Specifically, Russian Lt. Gen. Sergei Kuralenko has accused Turkey of nine violations. Rebels have denied them. The United States and the United Nations are investigating these breaches and are taking the accusations “seriously”. Throughout this conflict, Russia has taken the upper hand in defending President Bashar Assad and complicated U.S. efforts to oust him.
