Shelter is necessary to have during an emergency situation to help keep people safe from the elements or to be hidden out of sight. Shelter can be a difficult thing to pack for in an emergency kit, mainly because shelter materials can be on the heavy side. Most of the time, when people camp outside its in a cabin, RV, or a tent. Although tents don’t have to be large, a tent can be very heavy and will not fit in a back pack. The items below are important to include in an emergency kit for a shelter:
Rope- Rope is important to aid the shelter and make it stronger. The rope can be used to tie branches together, tie an emergency blanket to several trees to make a wall, or for anything that needs bonding. Rope is also useful for other things not pertaining to shelter, such as for a group of people to hold in a blizzard so nobody gets lost.
Duct Tape- Duct tape is great for patching holes in a shelter or connecting items together. Duct tape is extremely strong, can be weather resistant, and lasts for years. Duct tape would per perfect to fix a tear in an emergency blanket and prevent ripping in the future. Also, duct tape can be used for fixing a wound or fixing clothes.
Emergency Blanket- This is by far the best item to include in an emergency kit for shelter. This is because emergency blankets are light, compact, and fit in a backpack. When choosing a blanket, the main things to look for are tear ability, size, and reflectiveness. Many new blankets are tear proof, meaning that even if they get cut by a knife, they wont rip the whole way down the blanket. Sizes for emergency blankets generally range from a small 1-person blanket to a large utility blanket. Also, the more reflective the blanket is, the more heat that can be reflected back to a person’s body. An ideal blanket is the Utility Blanket by S.O.L. This blanket is 7 ft by 5 ft, reflects 95 percent body heat, and weighs an impressive 15.5 ounces.
The ideal shelter is always a building or a car, however if you need to pack a light emergency kit, the items above would be perfect.
