Are you prepared to survive any situation? More importantly, How can you survive any situation? Survival difficulty increases depending on the situation. Is it a society ending situation? Is it a natural disaster? Are you being hunted? Are you a lost camper? Is another country invading? These are some basic questions to get your mind focused on the correct approach to survival: you must have a purpose in mind so that you know how to prepare.
One of the best ways to decrease the difficulty of survival, A.K.A. increasing your chance of survival, is by strategically preparing gear that can aid you in a difficult situation. The collection of gear is called by many names. This could be determined by its purpose, or user preference in terminology. There are Go Bags, Get-Home Bags, Bug-Out Bags, Emergency Kits, Survival Kits, Survival Bags, or your bag for when SHTF.
When you create your bag, think of what the purpose of the bag is. Will you have more than one bag? For example, you could have a bag in your car (a “Get-Home bag”), an emergency kit in your backpack (in case you get lost hiking), and a SHTF bag (for that society ending event).
No matter the bag, there are a few basic things that you should consider when putting thought into your bag. Here are some considerations:
-Food (Emergency Food Bars, Meals, Snacks, etc.)
-Water (Bottles, Filters, Tablets, etc.)
-Shelter (Tent, tarp, emergency blanket, etc.)
-Fire (Lighter, matches, strikers, etc.)
-Navigation (compass, maps, GPS, etc.)
-Signaling (Phone, whistle, mirror, etc.)
-First Aid (Quick clot, gauze, Bandaid, etc.)
-Space (How large is that bag? Is there wasted space in it? Is it smartly packed?)
-Weight (How heavy is your pack to carry? Can you carry that 100 pound pack for miles?)
-Duration (How long is your bag going to sustain you?)
-Other (Money, Knife, Lights, etc.)
Check out this fun video below. Though it is a dramatized situation for entertainment, it displays an example of a Go Bag for the specific purpose of this agent/spy character. Further, think about what would you do if you lose your bag? Could you improvise?
